This book “Barbaro, Smarty Jones and Ruffian: The People’s Horses” is written by a fan for other fans of racing. It celebrates the greatness of three legendary equine individuals and tells their stories, as they have never been told.
In the last few years with horses such as Smarty Jones and Barbaro, many new fans have been introduced to the “Sport of Kings.” It is refreshing to have a book that looks at both the history and future of this great sport.
Today the racing industry faces many challenges. Among our spectators are those who view horse racing as cruel, and express concern about the fate of horses not as fortunate as Smarty Jones. This book addresses these issues, and many others that illuminate the strong competitive spirit and rich history of this great sport
For the proud tradition to continue as we have known it, funds must be raised to care for retired horses, improve conditions for others and continue needed research to maintain the health of our equine charges. I am pleased to say that Linda Hanna, the author of the book, has chosen the Kentucky Equine Humane Center, as a designated charity for a portion of the book’s proceeds. This recently-established effort provides rescue, placement and adoption opportunities for all breeds of horse. Even the smallest donation can make a difference in the life of an unwanted horse.
